Like Peppermint and Sick

Location: Fourth Floor Texas Union on the North Side

Utilities: 2 Stalls (automatic), 2 Urinals (automatic), 2 sinks, Paper Towel Dispensers (automatic), soap dispensers

I've found that the further up you go into the Texas Union the cleaner the bathrooms are (particularly because the homeless are so fond of the second floor). This is why I often make the trek up to the fourth floor to the nicest (albeit smallest) of the bathrooms on the north end of the building. When you come up the north stairwell the bathroom is only a short walk down the hall.

Everything about the bathroom is relatively standard. The stalls are usually very clean and well stocked with the standard one ply toilet paper (the Union custodial staff does a pretty good job).

However when it comes to the sinks the water never seems to effectively rinse all the soap off of my hand. Upon further inspection it turned out this was a problem with all the faucets in the Union. For some reason, its too light to get the soap off which kind of bothers me.

My only other complaint is the smell. Like all the other bathrooms in the Union, this one contains a sent dispenser meant to cover the normal smells of the restroom. However, unlike the other restrooms, this one is about a third of the size. Unfortunately, the sent dispenser is not similarly down scaled so that the concentration of sent, a sickly sweet sort of peppermint, can be annoying at times. That isn't to say its rendered unusable because of this; it simply means it can hit you a little if you aren't prepared for it.

Overall, its a simple, clean restroom with a few forgivable problems. I give it four flushes out of five.

  2. I’d like to comment on the woman's restroom across from the Santa Rita Room on the third floor as I remember from several occasions that its foyer/powder room is particularly beautiful. But I wanted to go give it a once over before leaving my comment. Today, it is under construction.

So instead, I will comment on two other woman’s restrooms of The Union. Both are located on the ground level where all of the restaurants are.

First, the restroom tucked away just past the Starbucks seating/wifi area. You have to go through two doors to get to the restroom, and the second one requires some strength to open. Some sort of pressure imbalance is happening there. 3 or 4 stalls, three sinks, two paper towel dispensers, a couple of soap dispensers. (I would like to note that The Union’s soap is the best smelling on campus and that their paper towels are 100% more absorbent than the paper towels of the Main Building. Never attempt to wipe up a spill with a paper towel you have gotten from the ground floor of the Main Building. Waste of time.) This restroom is clean for its busy area, and the colors are white/neutral. The only problem is with the flush mechanisms. The flush of these toilets are so powerful that when you go in, the toilet seats are often sprinkled with toilet water droplets. I think the water is “fresh” toilet water and not soiled water, but still. I wipe them before sitting.

Another restroom on the ground floor of The Union is across from Penne Pasta. I like this one. Four stalls (one handicap), three sinks, three superior towel dispensers (automatic) and two soap dispensers. It’s clean from the floors to the ceiling. My one complaint would be the tile color scheme. Pink floor tile, white, green, yellow and maroon wall tile, and black countertops speckled with white. But the water gets both cold and scalding hot, depending on your preference (you can adjust the temperature as you can in most household showers). That’s a big plus.
